Thursday, April 18, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė accepted letters of credence from Ambassador Carlos Brugnini Lagos of Uruguay.

According to the President, Lithuania-Uruguay cooperation is minimal as yet. Student exchange and collaboration in the field of science and research could contribute to strengthening ties between the two countries. Uruguay is particularly interested in the achievements of Lithuanian biotech and laser specialists.

The President noted that in order to enhance the bilateral dialogue it was necessary to sign the framework agreements on economic and political cooperation. The appointment of Uruguay's Honorary Consul in Lithuania would also serve to strengthen the relationship. The Ambassador currently resides in Warsaw.

The diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Uruguay were established in 1931. Uruguay did not recognize the incorporation of Lithuania into the USSR. Lithuanian-Uruguayan diplomatic relations were reestablished 20 years ago - in 1993.

The diplomat (69) earlier served as Uruguay's ambassador to Italy, Switzerland and Poland, as well as in the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
