In Ghana, Lithuanian Foreign Vice-Minister Discusses Strengthening Cooperation

On 16 April in Accra, the Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Neris Germanas, who is paying a bilateral visit to Ghana, met with Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Hanna Serwaa Tetteh and presented Lithuania’s preparation to hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Important issues related to Sub-Saharan Africa were discussed.

Lithuanian entrepreneurs take an active interest in business opportunities in Africa; therefore, prospects for building and strengthening the economic and business partnership were also discussed. The Lithuanian Foreign Vice-Minister and the Minister spoke about bilateral cooperation in the field of education. The Foreign Vice-Minister invited Ghanaian students to take advantage of opportunities to study in Lithuania.

At the meeting, the Lithuanian Foreign Vice-Minister and Ghana’s Foreign Minister explored closer cooperation within the United Nations system. The Lithuanian Foreign Vice-Minister requested Ghana to support Lithuania’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2014-2015 term. Elections for the Security Council will be held in October.

In Accra, Germanas also met with the head of the Delegation of the European Union to Ghana and discussed with him Lithuania’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU, as well as the country’s ambitions to contribute to European activities in West Africa.

Ghana recognised Lithuania’s independence on 23 December 1991. Diplomatic relations were established on 28 May 1992. The Ambassador of Ghana accredited to Lithuania resides in Berlin.
