Besides, the Ukrainian parliamentarians thoroughly discussed the Lithuanian approach to the Nord Stream 2 project and its impact on Ukraine. The Ukrainians expressed deep concern about Russian plans to extend the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to Germany, which ran counter to the interests of the European Union (EU), represented a risk of further destabilisation in Ukraine and would cause harm to the central European countries.
"Gas flow through Ukraine is of strategic interest for the EU as a whole not only regarding security, but also the stability in Central and Eastern Europe. Therefore, we, as a state making steps towards full energy independence, have to support Ukraine as a country and the EU position on this issue," argued Mr Sargūnas at the meeting.
The Ukrainian delegation will stay in Lithuania throughout the week and meet with members of various Seimas committees and representatives from ministries, the Bank of Lithuania, the Lietuvos Energija Group and other bodies.
