A joint meeting of the coalition factions took place in Vilnius earlier this week. During the meeting, the primary topic of discussion was the change of the tax system, designed to change the size of tax-free amount in order to reduce the tax burden on people with lower incomes and create more favourable conditions for small and medium-sized enterprises.

During the meeting, the chairwoman of the parliamentary faction of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania (EAPL) Rita Tamašunienė, on behalf of the party presented the postulates of the electoral program of the EAPL regarding the tax reliefs on the goods of first necessity and hotel services.

The chairwoman of the EAPL faction noticed that the prices of the goods of first necessity are currently very high and severely limit the purchasing power of a significant proportion of the citizens of Lithuania. Therefore, the reduction of VAT on the goods of first necessity (cereals, milk, meat, vegetables, fruits, eggs) would reduce their prices, what is crucial to the people receiving low incomes.

Lithuania is blessed with natural beauty and historical heritage. Therefore it is obligatory to take advantage of this potential in the field of tourism. The faction chairwoman emphasized that tourism could become one of the basic branches of economy of Lithuania generating a large part of GDP. However, an increase of VAT on hotel services from 9 to 21 percent made by the previous term, was a strong blow for the development of tourism. Nowadays, the tourism industry is maintained with great difficulty. As R. Tamašunienė noted, VAT on hotel services in neighbouring countries such as Latvia or Poland is much lower. For this reason it is increasingly difficult for the Lithuanian tourism industry to stay competitive.

The party submitted these proposals to tax working group a few months ago. They were included in the program provisions of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania.
