European Commission supports Lithuanian energy priorities

On May 3 Minister of energy Jaroslav Neverovič met in Vilnius with the Secretary General of the European Commission Catherine Day. During the meeting, minister presented energy priorities of the Lithuanian presidency of the European Council and expressed his certitude that cooperation between Lithuania and European Commission will ensure the successful implementation of the energy goals.

May 3, Vilnius. Minister of energy Jaroslav Neverovič met with the Secretary General of the European Commission Catherine Day. During the meeting, minister presented energy priorities of the Lithuanian presidency of the European Council and expressed his certitude that cooperation between Lithuania and European Commission will ensure the successful implementation of the energy goals.

„To successfully achieve Lithuanian presidency goals in the energy sector, cooperation between Lithuania and European Commission is vital. Commissions support and help to prepare the necessary documents and start the discussions as soon as possible is very important to Lithuania" – said minister J. Neverovič during the meeting.

The main energy priorities during Lithuanian presidency are the completion of EU internal energy market by 2014 and strengthening of the external dimension of the EU energy policy. Implementation of these goals would strongly increase Europe's energy security and guarantee fair and consumer friendly prices for the European citizens.

According to J. Neverovič, it is of an extreme importance to ensure Commission's support during the preparation for the discussions on the completion of EU internal market. Whereas Commissions report on external dimension of EU energy policy is very important in order to consolidate energy policy of the whole EU, therefore Lithuania will seek to consistently strengthen these measures.

C. day expressed Commissions support for Lithuanian energy priorities and stressed the importance of the Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan (BEMIP). She also ensured the minister, that European Commission is ready for close and intensive cooperation.
