“Collective defence is our key pillar and Lithuania’s chief contribution to it is the mechanized division matching NATO standards. Tanks are the root platform in such a capability. Tank integration in the Armed Forces is the most time-consuming step, therefore no delay is acceptable,” notes Minister of National Defence Dovilė Šakalienė.
It is a coherent step in implementation of the regional NATO defence plans and the agreement on acquisition of 44- Leopard 2A8 tanks signed in Berlin by Minister of National Defence Dovilė Šakalienė and Federal Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius. The agreement covers acceleration of tank production and securing their delivery until 2030 thus speeding up Full Operational Capability of the National Division.
“The new Leopard 2A8 tanks are unique not just because of their powerful armament and mobility but also cutting-edge protection systems. Inbuilt sensors, laser warning system and other advanced equipment will ensure maximum personnel protection even in the most complex of situations. In view of the currently booming UAV and UAV jamming industry, the tanks will be manufactured the most up to date complex electronic and kinetic anti-drone equipment,” claims Minister of National Defence Dovilė Šakalienė.
According to Minister, the forty four Leopard 2A8 agreement is not just vital for the effectiveness of our division and a next phase of the Lithuanian Armed Forces modernization, but also a critical component of cooperation with the German Division, the unit which would defend Lithuania in case of necessity, thus ensuring their fluent joint action in defence of our territory.
Lithuania plans making the advance payment for the tank battalion as soon as the third quarter of this year.
The Law on Budget Approval 2025–2027 the Ministry of Finance was authorized to borrow to meet the needs of the National Defence System, including for military and mobility infrastructure, and capital investments in the defence industry developed in Lithuania.
Lithuania dedicates 4% of GDP for defence this year already and plans raising that to 5.25% of GDP next year.
