Every year natural and man-made disasters threaten the lives of millions. On Monday 19 August, Word Humanitarian Day is held to honour those who bring assistance and relief and also to draw attention to humanitarian needs worldwide. Here you will find a selection of stories published on our website in the first semester of 2013 to enable you to find out more about what the EU is doing as the world´s largest humanitarian aid donor.
The European Union as a whole (both the EU as such and its 28 members states separately) is the world's leading humanitarian aid donor, a position that is supported by the majority of Europeans. According to an opinion survey conducted last year, 9 out of 10 Europeans (88%) consider it important for the EU to fund humanitarian aid. And 8 out of 10 (84%) agree that the EU should continue to fund humanitarian aid in spite of the current economic crisis.
