"Lithuania and Latvia understand the threats and challenges faced by our region and stand ready to counter them together. Lithuania and Latvia both hold the same position on this issue. As the geopolitical situation continues to change rapidly, we must work together to strengthen our defense. Therefore, we will assess in Warsaw which Wales agreements have been implemented successfully and where we need to achieve better results," the President said.
According to the President, Lithuania and Latvia successfully cooperate in the field of defense and contribute to accelerating the implementation of the Wales agreements, they support a stronger role of NATO allies in the region and develop joint military capacities. The two countries also make a substantial contribution to fighting hostile propaganda directed against the West – Lithuanian experts will also work in the NATO Strategic Communications Center of Excellence.
The President underlined that NATO had to continue to react appropriately to geopolitical realities and have a long-term strategy on how to respond to emerging challenges. It is also important to reduce the time of reaction, develop infrastructure and strengthen mutual cooperation.
At the meeting, the Presidents also discussed topical issues of bilateral cooperation. Joint energy projects and progress in their implementation as well as prospects for strengthening cooperation in the area of border control were also addressed. Among the other issues touched upon were refugees and assistance to Greece, which are matters of importance to the whole of the European Union, and the situation in Ukraine.
