The second meeting of the extraordinary session of the Seimas will take place on Tuesday next week. This decision was approved by the Seimas Council on Monday.
The Speaker of the Seimas himself will not be able to attend. During the meeting, he asked the Council for permission to travel to Poland.
‘Since an unscheduled, unforeseen session has been organised and I have a trip to the Republic of Poland planned for private purposes, I ask that I be allowed to leave on the 21st-26th,’ Saulius Skvernelis said at the Council meeting.
The members of the board did not object to his request.
As announced, last Thursday President Gitanas Nausėda signed a decree submitting the candidate for prime minister I. Ruginienė, nominated by the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), to the Seimas for approval.
Parliamentarians will have to make a decision on the new prime minister no later than one week after her presentation in the plenary hall. The vote in the Seimas on the prime minister's candidacy will be open – a simple majority of votes will suffice for her approval.
If parliament approves the candidate for prime minister, he or she will be required to present to parliament, no later than 15 days after the nomination, the Cabinet of Ministers approved by the president and submit the government's programme for consideration. The government obtains the power to act when the Seimas approves its programme by a majority of the members present at the meeting.
