WorldThe Ministry of Foreign Affairs provided humanitarian assistance to the residents of eastern Ukraine2014-11-16, 15:48On 14 November, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania allocated 175 thousand litas in humanitarian assistance to the residents of eastern Ukraine who have been affected by Russia's aggression against Ukraine. The funds will be transferred to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), which provides emergency humanitarian assistance to the forcibly displaced people and the people who have lost their place of residence in Ukraine. We are deeply concerned about the Ebola outbreak in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone and saddened by the suffering and loss of life it is inflicting. We are mindful of the serious humanitarian, social and economic impacts on those countries, and of the potential for these impacts to spread. MEPs condemned Turkey's "maritime survey" activities as encroaching upon the Republic of Cyprus' exclusive economic zone and its sovereign right to explore the natural resources within it, in a resolution voted on Thursday. The text also calls on Turkey to stop its "provocative actions" and "threats" against the Republic of Cyprus. President Dalia Grybauskaitė attended NATO military exercise Iron Sword 2014 at the General Silvestras Žukauskas Training Area. The event involves more than 2.5 thousand troops and 300 military vehicles from 9 NATO member states. It is one of the largest military exercises in Lithuania this year. President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended congratulations to Polish President Bronisław Komorowski and to the people of Poland on Independence Day. Last week the Today in President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė received the prize 'Goldene Victoria' in Berlin. All three Baltic states were awarded for nurturing the idea of peaceful struggle for freedom and faith in the future of Europe. The Northern Ireland peace process, Turkey's recent actions in Cypriot waters, the EU-Moldova association agreement and the Court of Auditors' report will all be on the agenda when MEPs meet on Wednesday and Thursday for the November part-session in Brussels. The session will start with the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the election of the new EP vice-president to replace Corina Creţu who left to become commissioner. On Sunday it will already have been 25 years since the Berlin Wall collapsed. On that day thousands gathered all along the wall that had separated East and West Germany since 1961. There had been peaceful demonstrations since September 1989 and the call for freedom to travel became stronger each day. When the East German government announced that people were now able to cross the border whenever they wanted, people flocked to the wall and tore it down. On Thursday, November 6, President Dalia Grybauskaitė will travel to Germany to accept the Golden Victoria award (Goldene Victoria für die Europäer des Jahres) on behalf of Lithuania at a solemn ceremony in Berlin. Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos visited Parliament on 4 November as part of his tour to Europe to garner political support and financial aid for peace negotiations with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) insurgents in his country. "We have sought Europe's support in the peace process and I thank you so much for the support that we have received today," he said. "Europe has shown to the world that it's possible to leave war behind and build peace. Now it's Colombia's turn." |
