The new depots are scheduled to be built by 2026.
Lithuanian company Atamis will select the optimum depot development solutions and necessary territories for almost 314,000 euros. LG's subsidiary Lietuvos Gelezinkeliu Infrastruktura (LTG Infra), the Transport Ministry and Atamis have already signed a related contract.
LTG Infra's CEP Karolis Sankovski says that once Ral Baltica comes online, infrastructure in Lithuania will expand considerably and rail traffic will grow.
"That maintenance will need more attention and capacity. Obviously, the existing depots will not be enough, therefore, we need to get ready and build new ones," he said.
The project will be co-funded by the EU, the Lithuanian state budget and LG's funds.
Estimated to cost around 5.8 billion euros, the European standard 1,435 mm gauge electrified railway for passenger and freight transport will connect Tallinn, Riga, Kaunas and Warsaw and is scheduled to be built by 2026.
