The cultural capitals of Lithuania were founded under the initiative ´´Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009´´, however for about ten years it has been an annual independent project.
The aim of the initiative is to promote the cultural lives and creativity of the inhabitants of these regions and to increase the availability of culture, art, and artistic initiatives for residents and tourists.
During the realization of the project, new and extended traditional festivals, concerts and interesting exhibitions are organized, books are published, new hiking traits and documentaries are created and the national heritage objects are renewed.
The Ministry of Culture organizes a contest every three years.
This year’s cultural capital of Lithuania is the Marijampolė, next year it will be the Rokiškis.
