On Thursday, the European leaders agreed to grant EU candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova. Countries should use the more than €700 billion available under EU recovery plans to adapt to new social and economic realities, MEPs say. On Tuesday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Helga Maria Schmid. On 20 June, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania with the Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of the Russian Federation to Lithuania, Sergey Ryabokon. The Russian diplomat was handed a diplomatic note explaining the European Union's restrictive measures that apply to restricted goods of specific categories in transit by rail to and from Kaliningrad. MEPs will vote on plans to cut carbon emissions, boost gas storage and support for countries hosting Ukrainian refugees in the 22-23 June plenary session. “The NATO Summit in Madrid must send a very clear message to Russia – our commitment to defend every inch of our allies’ territory is not just words and is backed by strong measures”, said Minister of National Defence A. Anušauskas at the NATO Defence Ministerial. On Monday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson. The President and the EU Commissioner discussed synchronization and European energy independence. MEPs welcomed the unity and additional sanctions delivered by the European Council but called for more arms to Ukraine and more attention to those struggling within the EU. Parliament will vote on plans to reduce carbon emissions, discuss EU support for Ukraine and host the LUX Audience Award ceremony at its plenary session on 6-9 June.
