Lithuania and Israel hold political consultations, focus on bilateral and multilateral cooperation

On 24 April in Vilnius, representatives from the Lithuanian and Israeli Ministries of Foreign Affairs discussed Lithuania’s incoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union, bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

“Recently our bilateral agenda has been very busy, which testifies to excellent relations between Lithuania and Israel. We hope that Lithuania’s incoming Presidency of the EU Council will provide another opportunity to further deepen the relationship between our two countries,” Neris Germanas said at the meeting with Israeli officials.

The delegations were led by Ina Marčiulionytė, Director of Latin America, Africa, Asia and Pacific Department, and the Israeli Foreign Ministry’s Deputy Director-General Raphael Schutz, who highlighted that bilateral relations had reached a qualitatively new stage over the recent years.

Germanas (first from right), Schutz (second from left)The officials exchanged opinions on promoting the economic and cultural cooperation, the upcoming events to mark the 70th anniversary of the liquidation of the Vilna ghetto and the Fourth World Litvak Congress this autumn.

The meeting also discussed the priorities of Lithuania’s incoming Presidency of the EU Council; the Presidency’s events in Israel were presented. The officials stressed that the Eastern Partnership Summit on 28 and 29 November was one of the priorities for the Lithuanian Presidency.

Views were also exchanged on the Middle East peace process, Iran and the continuing conflict in Syria.
