Lithuanian Foreign Minister And British Ambassador Discuss Lithuania's Upcoming Presidency Of The Eu Council

The Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius invited the United Kingdom to participate at the highest political level in the 3rd Eastern Partnership Summit this November.

The Lithuanian Foreign Minister and the British Ambassador to Lithuania David Hunt discussed this and other important issues on the bilateral and EU agendas at the April 9 meeting.

During the conversation, Linkevičius and Hunt hailed the good relations between the countries and active contacts between officials, stated similar positions and mutual support within the European Union, NATO, and other international organisations. The meeting focused on growing bilateral cultural and trade relations, the interlocutors highlighted the contribution of the numerous and dynamic Lithuanian community in the United Kingdom to their development.

The Foreign Minister acquainted the British diplomat with the priorities of Lithuania's upcoming Presidency and noted that Lithuania would focus on financial stability, smart growth and jobs, an open and secure Europe, and the neighbourhood in the second half of 2013. The Ambassador expressed his country's commitment to support these priorities and stressed the need to try as much as possible and give attention to the EU agenda on actions that promote economic growth.

When discussing the situation in the EU's Eastern neighbourhood, the interlocutors expressed hope that Ukraine would successfully and in due time meet the necessary requirements for joining the European Union and signing the association agreement in Vilnius.

The British Ambassador to Lithuania David Hunt presented his credential letters to the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė on 28 June 2011.
