The two presidents discussed the Eastern Partnership policy and its agenda, focusing on the situation in Ukraine and Belarus. The leaders expressed their unanimous support to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as to countering disinformation and propaganda spread by unfriendly countries. They also voiced solidarity with the Belarus civil society fighting for democratic elections and human rights. The presidents emphasized that it was necessary to join efforts in support of the long-term vision of democratic Belarus.
The presidents also discussed the situation in Russia. “Russia failed to pass the human rights’ test,” the President said, underlining that Lithuania and Poland called on Russia to release illegally detained Russian citizens. They expressed concern over the recent expulsion of diplomats from Russia.
Opinions were exchanged on holding the Eastern Partnership Summit in the second half of this year. It was stated that finding solutions aimed at strengthening civil societies and the rule of law in Eastern partnership countries should be at the center of the summit. It was agreed to work towards signing a joint declaration, which would set out an ambition agenda for partnership initiatives.
The two presidents underscored their agreement on the Rail Baltica project and its adequate funding from the EU budget - the main precondition for its successful delivery. The leaders also emphasized full compliance with the agreements reached on the multiannual financial framework at the European Council Summit of July 2020.
Views were exchanged during the call on the need to increase vaccine production capacities, ensure their timely distribution among member states and expand their accessibility to EU neighboring countries. The objective to reach collective immunity in summer is ambitious but can be realized.
As regards regional security, the leaders focused on strengthening the transatlantic bond and highlighted its importance for ensuring the security of the Baltic States and Poland. They also shared views on the ways to deepen cooperation with the United States and its new administration.
The presidents decided to hold the first Council of Presidents of Poland and Lithuania later this year.
