In the spring session, the Seimas mainly focused on greater efficiency and transparency of the public sector as well as on social security and health, education, culture and science, national security and defence. It also deliberated a number of draft laws on law enforcement, finance, energy, economy and other relevant matters. This session saw the delivery of the annual State of the Nation Address by Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of the Republic of Lithuania, and the annual activity report of the Government.
The key tasks of the session included adoption of the amendments to the new Labour Code, which were developed in accordance with the proposals approved by consensus at the Tripartite Council; endorsement of the reform of forest enterprises; approval of the optimisation plan of state universities; adoption of the amendments to the Law on Alcohol Control to reduce alcohol consumption and access to it; and passing of the amendments to the Civil Code to ensure the safety of children in families and speed up child custody and adoption processes.
Article 85 of the Statute of the Seimas provides that the Seimas meets biannually in two regular spring and autumn sessions. The spring session opens on 10 March and closes on 30 June. The autumn session opens on 10 September and closes on 23 December. The Seimas may resolve to prolong a session.
