EducationLast Wednesday a very important meeting of the Vilnius City Council took place. During the meeting, draft resolutions unfavorable for national minority schools - Polish and Russian - operating in the capital, were considered. The team of Vilnius University (VU) students will represent Lithuania in the prestigious synthetic biology competition iGEM (Eng. International Genetically Engineered Machine competition) in Boston this year. 280 teams from all over the world will present their synthetic biology projects. President Dalia Grybauskaitė launched the Lithuanian National Day at World Expo 2015 in Milan. At the exhibition, which this year introduces the theme "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life", Lithuania presents its culinary and cultural heritage. Yesterday, at the Presidential Palace of the Republic of Lithuania, representatives of communities of 10 Polish and Russian schools held a protest action. The Vilnius self-government administration committee responsible for events has issued a permission to hold a protest action on Wednesday on the Square of Europe next to the building of the self-government of Vilnius (Konstitucijos avenue 3, Vilnius). The first loans for graduates taking their Master's degree abroad are now available under the Erasmus+ Master Loan Guarantee Scheme. The agreement, which will provide up to € 30 million worth of loans guaranteed by the European Commission through its Erasmus+ Programme, will be signed by MicroBank and the European Investment Fund. This first agreement will provide financial support for students from Spain taking their Master degree in one of the 33 Erasmus+ Programme Countries, or students from these countries moving to Spain for a Master, European Commission informs. On 1st June 2015 national minorities organised a picket in defence of their schools in front of the building of the Lithuanian Government. And now the determination of national minorities, including Polish, started bringing results. The 10 films competing for this year's Lux Prize have been revealed at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, including five by first-time directors, a mix of genres and the selection's first-ever Icelandic film. The European Parliament awards the prize to the best European film every year. At the end of the month it will be announced which three films have been short-listed for the finals, meaning they will also be screened all over the EU as part of the Lux Film Days. According to national rankings, Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) graduates are the most valued marketing professionals in the job market (magazine "Reitingai", 2014). To prove the point: KTU marketing undergraduates were the first Lithuanians, who found themselves among the winners of Google Online Marketing Challenge last year. Recently there was a weird show off of the vice mayor of Vilnius, conservative Valdas Benkunskas. He proposed to move the legendary Polish Vilnius Joachimo Lelevelio secondary school from the district of Antakalnis to Zirmunai, and to make the school apply for an 'asylum' in the elementary school of A. Vivulskio on the Minties street. |
