EducationTeachers from schools and kindergartens in various Lithuanian cities joined a strike on December 10th 2015, with part of them protesting in some schools in Panevezys, Vilnius, Marijampole, Kaunas, Skuodas and Sirvintos municipalities. December 3, 2015, is the opening date of the Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) Creativity and Innovation Centre "LinkMenų fabrikas". It is the first centre of its kind in Lithuania for developing students' creativity. "The arts, engineering, management, studies, science, business – these are the main poles, on which the ''factory'' is being built''– said Adas Meškėnas, the Director of "LinkMenų fabrikas", during the opening ceremony of the new centre. On 8 December, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Rytis Paulauskas met with representatives of CERN, one of the world's largest and most respected centres for scientific research, and handed a letter from the Prime Minister of Lithuania Algirdas Butkevičius, expressing Lithuania's aim of becoming an associate member of CERN. President Dalia Grybauskaitė opened new premises of Thermo Fisher Scientific in Vilnius, which produces magnetic beads that should become a serious antidote in the fight against oncological diseases and HIV. Lithuania is the first and currently the only country in the world starting to produce technological products of such level. "Swedish Light in December" is an annual festival, which started with the celebration of Lucia's Day in 2008 and has already become a tradition. It has gradually spread around Lithuania and is currently the most famous Swedish event. The event "Hacker Games: Vilnius" at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU), demanded sleepless nights, endless creativity and successful cooperation from the participants. This was the Start-up workshop, to which they invited designers, developers, managers, marketing and other specialists, as well as people, interested in innovations and start-ups. This time the participants showed quick reaction to the recent events: one of the hackathon projects was the computer game on the notorious fugitive Igor Molotkov with an automatic weapon AK-74. The results of Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2016 have been announced on 2 December 2015. Vilnius University made its debut in the ranking with a successful result of the spot 116 joining the list of top 200 of higher education institutions in Brazil, Russia, India, China, Soult Africa and 30 other "emerging countries". Competition is open for Erasmus+ student or recent graduate traineeship grants. Application deadline is 31 January 2016. First stage results have been announced for both students and graduates. The placement period is 2–4 months. Traineeship must end before 30-09-2016 (for recent graduates – a year after graduation). The biggest ever in Lithuania international astronomical conference will be held on 1-4 December 2015 in Vilnius. Astronomers from Australia, Brazil, Chile, USA and Europe are coming to this significant gathering. Dr Timo Prusti, Gerry Gilmore, Sofia Randich and many other outstanding astronomers will share their findings and insights during the 4-day event in Lithuania. VU Professor Gražina Tautvaišienė leads the Lithuanian team of researchers and conference organizers. From January to September, the Parliament ran another edition of its annual guest photographer contest. Inspired by 2015 being the European Year for Development, a new theme was announced every month, such as education, health and migration.
