Riga, Ventspils and Liepaja handled a total of 3.88 mln tons of cargo last month, an average y-o-y decline of one-third. This marks the first time ever that cargo traffic in Lithuania has surpassed the total for all three Latvian ports combined, according to the Klaipeda port authority.
Riga posted a 25% drop in cargo traffic to 2.1 mln tons. Ventspils saw cargo volumes slum down by 43% to 1.2 mln tons, but loadings in Liepaja edged up by 0.4% to 570,300 mln tons.
Annual cargo traffic via Klaipeda declined by 0.6% in 2019 from 2018 to 46.3 mln tons. Bulk cargo volumes grew by 3.5%, with agricultural product loadings alone surging by 60.8%.
