A meeting of the Rail Baltica Task Force which ended in Riga yesterday and which was attended also by a representative of the European Commission discussed a proposal for a more effective implementation of the project.

Based on decisions adopted by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, it has been proposed that the parties to the project, i. e. Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland should establish a joint European Economic Interest Group (EEIG) responsible for the implementation of the Rail Baltica Project, in particular, for the coordination and administration of the project preparatory activities, drawing up of the EU funding application, formulating of implementation plans, and attracting cargo and passenger flows.

According to Lithuania‘s representatives, the EEIG proposal is being put forward as the joint venture model currently under discussion has failed to meet the expectations. Such interest group models are now widely used in the EU Member States for the effective management of transport corridors.

“This legal form will enable a much more effective implementation of the project and considerable savings for the states participating in Rail Baltica. In addition, it will ensure that the application for the EU assistance will be submitted in time“, says Minister R. Sinkevičius, noting that currently Lithuania is ahead of the preparatory works schedule approved by the Government.

Upon hearing the reasoning, parties to Rail Baltica welcomed the initiative put forward by Lithuania as a beneficial one. The parties are going to adopt a decision on the model for effective implementation of Rail Baltica in the nearest future.

Rail Baltica is a railway line with the standard European gauge  linking Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland.
