President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Jospeh Daul, Chairman of the Group of the European People's Party in the European Parliament, and the Group's Vice-Chairs Marian-Jean Marinescu and József Szájer.

The main points of discussion were Lithuania's upcoming EU presidency, measures to deal with euro zone problems and enhance growth in the European Union, as well as Eastern Partnership. Among the issues discussed in particular was the EU's multiannual financial framework for 2014-2020 which was agreed on by the European leaders at the beginning of the year.

Dalia Grybauskaitė underlined that Lithuania - which would take over the helm of the European Union in a month's time - had the interest to have agreement on the multiannual budget secured with the European Parliament in time, during the Irish presidency.

"There are six months to go before 2014. The sooner agreement is reached and the relevant legislation for implementing budget-funded programmes is passed, the sooner EU member states will gain access to EU support," the President said.

She pointed out that many of the MFF related legal acts would be negotiated during Lithuania's presidency.

The EU multiannual financial framework is adopted by the European Council and approved by vote in the European Parliament.

In February, the EU budget negotiated earlier by the EU member states was significantly reduced because of the crisis. Still Lithuania managed to negotiate an increase of four billion litas in its financial package compared to the 2007-2013 framework. The overall level of EU financial support for Lithuania was increased by almost 10 percent, amounting to a total of 44.5 billion litas.
