Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council in the field of sport will continue implementation of the programme which includes collaboration of Ireland, Lithuania and Greece. During the presidency Lithuania will contribute to the unified topic of the three countries - sport as a sector's contribution to the economy and the labor market, with special focus on currently highly topical problem of youth unemployment, as well as the role of sport in promoting social cohesion and public health promotion.

On 25th August the biggest cycling event of Lithuania - Velomarathon 2013 - took place in Vilnius. The President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė awarded the most active team coming from Jonava and including both adults and children.

While preparing for the upcoming Euro-basket 2013 Lithuania's men's basketball team manages to maintain its dominance over other teams.

World Athletics Championships which took place in Moscow on 13th August were a successful event for Lithuanian athletes. Kristina Saltanovič, Brigita Virbalytė-Dimšienė and Neringa Aidietytė took place in the women's walking race of 20 km.

Friendly matches in basketball were extremely successful for the Lithuanian male national team which was undefeated in three games.

30 July 2013 was a very special day for our swimmer Rūta Meilutytė – she has won her first gold at the world swimming championship in Barcelona.

Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaitė has awarded a medal For Merits to Lithuania to professional ice hockey player Dainius Zubrus.

This Wednesday was the last day of the two week long universiade in Kazan, Russia. Lithuanian sportsmen performed well and ranked eleventh in total. Lithuanians won 10 medals - 6 gold, 1 silver, and 3 bronze.

Lithuanian basketball players started their preparations for European Basketball Championship. EuroBasket 2013 will be held this September in Slovenia. The Lithuanian team will spend a week of training in Palanga.
